Face Recognition

Face recognition enables different alerts for registered and unregistered people, and face-based search of recordings. It is off by default.

Enabling Face Recognition

Caution: biometric data is processed With face recognition on, a face signature is stored for everyone the cameras capture. Signatures are numeric data, not photos, and remain on this device only.

Face data is classified as sensitive information in many countries (GDPR, Illinois BIPA, Korea PIPA, and others). Signage, prior consent, and retention limits may be required, and use is prohibited in some regions. You are responsible for verifying and complying with the regulations that apply at the installation site.
  1. Go to the Settings tab.
  2. Turn on Face recognition. A privacy notice is shown once.
  3. Review the notice and click Turn on.
  4. Click Save. The setting applies to every camera in this place at once.

Note Face data is included only in recordings saved after the feature is enabled. Faces cannot be registered from earlier recordings, and face search does not cover them.

Registering a Face

No separate photography is required. Faces are registered by selecting them from saved recordings.

  1. On the History tab, open a recording showing the person.
  2. If the video is playing, pause it, then click the face in the frame. The face is marked and the Register button becomes available.
  3. Click Register.
  4. For a new person, select New face and enter a name. For a person already registered, select their name from the list.
  5. Register two or three more photos of the same person. Pick good photos automatically selects the shots best suited for recognition.
Note Registering a mix of front and side views, and bright and dim lighting, significantly improves recognition. A single photo works, but increases the chance of confusing two people.
Caution Naming a group on the People tab is not face registration. Only the steps above create a registration that alerts can use.
Managing and deleting registered faces

Settings > Registered faces lists the registered people and the number of photos each has. This row appears only while face recognition is on.

  • Click a name to expand that person's registered photos; each photo can be deleted individually.
  • Deleting all of a person's photos stops the alerts that use that person from firing.
  • Turning face recognition off does not delete registered faces. They are used again when the feature is re-enabled.
Caution A registered name cannot be changed. To change a name, delete the person and register them again; alerts that used the person lose their target.
